MEDIA RELEASE: Labor have abandoned Canberra Home Buyers

Labor’s housing plan completely leaves Canberra first homeowners behind.

Labor’s plan fails to deliver any relief to land supply to allow for the construction of family homes.

The arbitrary $600,000 cap will see buyers forced into apartments instead of family homes in Canberra.

The Federal Government would own up to forty per cent of your home.

With only 10,000 places nation-wide, only around 150 Canberrans will have the opportunity to access the scheme, if they can afford to buy within the cap.

Eligibility for the scheme is limited to individuals with an income of $90,000 or couples with a combined income of $120,000

In contrast, the Liberal Government is supporting first homeowners and single parents get into housing in the ACT by:

Delivering more land for more homes for Canberra families by unlocking 243 hectares of land in Canberra’s north, which would create around 2,000 blocks for family homes.

Helping first home buyers and single parents get into the market sooner by acting as a guarantor for your loan, meaning you retain ownership.

Raising the caps for our successful Home Guarantee Scheme to $750,000, creating greater choice for Canberra buyers.

50,000 places are available each year across the country under our Home Guarantee Scheme.

Supporting first home buyers with incomes of up to $125,000 for individuals, or $200,000 for couples

Senator for the ACT Zed Seselja said only a Liberal Government will deliver real, practical solutions to address the housing affordability crisis.

“We have a real plan to help first homeowners get into the market in the ACT, from addressing the lack of available supply, to acting as a guarantor to help more Canberrans get into the market sooner,” Senator Seselja said.

“I have personally championed the sale of excess land in Belconnen, that will create around 2,000 new family homes, as well as securing an increase in the price cap for our Home Guarantee Scheme to $750,000 in Canberra.”

“Our record on supporting Australians into home ownership speaks for itself. Over the last three years, the Liberal Government has supported more than 300,000 Australians into home ownership.”

“Labor cannot be trusted to help Canberrans into their dream of home ownership. Today’s announcement completely abandons Canberra first home buyers and families who will struggle to access this program, and would be locked out of the opportunity to purchase a family home."
